Constipation is rarely a serious problem in the sense that it is life-threatening but it can be the sign of serious disease. It is quite common and virtually all patients complain of constipation at some point in their life. Rapid-onset constipation is usually due to a specific disease or the side effect of a medication - pain medications being the most common. Chronic (long-term) constipation is usually due to a lack ob mobility the the lower intestines and is poorly understood. In the many cases, chronic constipation is an annoying problem that can be quite difficult to treat. Many patients simply live with the problem. You should also be aware that many patients have more that one reason to be constipated and that their constipation may be due to a combination of factors.
